Poll question: Just HOW MANY of us are Dial-Uppers?
The sig thing started me thinking about this.. Are there more dialups or broadbanders

Pictures are hosted externally, so they do not use DU bandwidth, but are a pain for people who use dial up. (they do have the option to turn off images though)..

I really miss the some of the images. Some, when "smallerfied" are rather "icky"..

1. I'm on dial up
I can say that I'm happy about the change. I don't want to turn off the images, some of them are really good...I just don't want them to take fifteen minutes to load.

2. Cable connection . . .
but I try to be considerate of DUers on dial-up when I post, by not posting enormous images and by providing a dial-up warning. (Sorry about the earlier Nighthawks threads that had no dial-up warning and ran up 200-300 posts.)

:hi:

4. Were you here at the OLD DU?
we used to have our sig stuff show up in every "compose post" box, and you could delete at will, so on long threads, the sig could be edited out.. i miss that option.

also, we used to routinely lock posts at around 100, and then start a second one, that helps dial uppers too :)

The realllllllly long ones can bog down.

6. Nah, I wasn't a DU member back then . . .
but Mr. Heidi and I are administrators of a community forum with more than 700 members, and the first software for that board was a nightmare for dial-up people (and I was a dial-up person back then). That made me more considerate of dial-up users.

You raise some really good points, SoCalDem. Maybe you'll usher in a new era of regard for others in the Lounge.

8. I hardly ever look at a thread that has
more than 100 posts. Just takes too long.

3. Dial up here too!
Not all of us DUers are starting threads about the tragedy that our wirele$$ laptop wouldn't work at "Panera" or about who all else will be at "Burning Man" this year! (recent threads)

Sometimes war IS the answer - class war, that is!

10. Dialup for now
But in 13 days I'll have a much higher speed connection.

I can't wait! I'll actually be able to play Forgotten Hope again! :woohoo:

11. Games are so far above my skill set..
I can manage solitaire and the pre-loaded pinball, but that's it for me :)

12. I'm on cable.
But I was on dial-up for a long time until about a year ago. I understand the dial-uppers pain. I also understand about the icky smallerfied images, but we just have to be more creative about it since you can't just plop any old picture you find into your sig.

13. High speed - both home and work
The office is the higher of the two - not quite sure what speed it is, or what system it is. At home, broadband.

15. I have High Speed cable internet...
After I got it the first time, I thought to myself; "Where has THIS been all my life?" I remember dial-up though and how it would take FOREVER to load pictures and web pages. *UGH* Never again for me!

16. I Agree... The Solution Was *Already* Available...
All anyone had to do was to just turn OFF the fucking siglines if it buged them so much! -- But it seems that the loud minority who had an issue with the few folks who abused siglines (with too many huge images) ruined it for everyone instead of targeting the problem at its source. Oh well... The whining wheel gets the grease, eh?

19. It's not quite like that
What if you enjoy sigs, but some asshole has a meg's worth of pictures?

There's thousands of sigs out there, but someone should have to turn them ALL off just to prevent it? Sure, there's the ignore feature, but regardless of the end-user remedy, it's arrogant to be requiring people to be downloading that much data for a silly little animation.

17. With DSL going for $29.95, dial-up is on it's way out.
3 of the web-site designers I know have just about ignored the old rule: "don't make your web page over X amount of Bytes".

Sadly..they feel that people who can't afford DSL can't afford to buy what's on the page.

18. Regardless of the connections of users, having people download
a half meg animation each page visit is obnoxious no matter which way you look at it.
