Culvers!

Great food, great menu, and the best bit is they're headquartered right here in Wisconsin!

1. A local chain called Skyline
But they are one of the resons why I'm only eating 1400 calories a day right now. I don't think they have any locations outside of southwest Ohio.

121. OK it is based on the sauce for Greek Pastitso. So if you ever ate that, then you
Edited on Sat Mar-14-09 08:16 AM by yellowdogintexas
know what it tastes like. I have a from scratch recipe for the chile and the list of spices is quite long. It includes just about all of the spices traditionally considered baking spices.

A bunch of Greek immigrants developed the dish as we know it with spaghetti and the various toppings.

Listen, if you like Greek Lasagne aka pastitso you will love a good platter of 5 way.

I buy the mix at Kroger and make it at home because you can't get it in Texas.

Steak n Shake does a fairly good version and we do have those here.

I make seriously good traditional chile but sometimes I just gotta have it Cincinnati style.

122. don't knock it if you haven't tried it. Mind you, I love a good hot SW style chile
as much as the next person, and sometimes I even serve my homemade bowl of red over spaghetti with some good cheddar shredded on top. Or sometimes over rice.

Think of the chile and cheese as sort of like nacho topping.

My non Cincinnati chile platter would be spaghetti, chile, cheese, onions and jalapeno peppers. A Texas 5 way. LOL

My homemade chili can make a grown man cry.

14. I love southwest Ohio...I spend a lot of time there, but....
I don't get Skyline Chili. Maybe it's because I compare it to Texas chili, which is probably an apples and oranges comparison.

Skyline isn't bad, but it's more like spaghetti sauce than it is chili.

24. Popeyes' at the Atlanta airport has become a tradition for me...
Until relatively recently, Popeye's was the only food place in whatever terminal I would always switch planes at the Atlanta airport. So it was always a tradition during my layover to get myself a meal at Popeyes.

Recently, they added a whole bunch of new restaraunts at the terminal. And despite some of the selections being very good, I just couldn't help myself but to continue to go to Popeyes'. It just wouldn't be the Atlanta airport without it.

....that they apparently think they are too good to expand beyond the West Coast. Don't tell me how supposedly great your burgers are if you're not willing to prove it to the entire country.

That being said, whenever I do make it out to Cali to visit, yeah I'll definitely try an In and Out

44. Burgerville: "Fresh. Local. Sustainable." Thread over. I win.
In addition to the usual burgers (made with hormone-free beef), they serve things like smoked salmon over greens and seasonal things like Walla Walla onion rings, fresh blackberry milkshakes, fresh strawberry shortcake, white bean and basil burgers, sweet potato fries, etc. etc. Here is what they are serving now: "During March, taste our new Rosemary Chicken Sandwich with rosemary aioli and frisée on a fresh-baked, French baguette."

Plus, they are going to experiment with serving wine and beer. :bounce:

MENU
Healthful food choices are a natural for us. We use local, vegetarian-fed and antibiotic-free beef in our burgers, cage-free eggs in our breakfast items and our salads feature mixed greens with sustainable, local ingredients such as smoked salmon and Oregon hazelnuts.

46. Freebirds, Thundercloud Subs, Moe's.
Freebirds has places all around Texas, at least. They are like Chipoltes. They make burritos and nachos while you choose the ingredients. Good sauce and corn relish, excellent vegetarian options.

Thunderclouds is an Austin sub shop, with locations all over Austin. Better bread than Subways, and options like hummus and guacamole, plus "Nada Chicken," which is obviously a vegetarian patty that tastes almost just like (what I imagine it taste like) chicken.

Moes are all over, and I've had one in Fort Lauderdale, FL, that sucked. But they are similar to Freebirds, but they have tofu!! That's right, vegetarians can feel like real humans there, rather than like afterthoughts offered a couple of options made with leftovers from the carnivore meals.

49. Popeyes
The chicken is much better than KFC or Church's Foul Fowl, and the biscuits are insanely yummy. The only problem is that there's only one within an hour of here (there's one right by Fenway Park).

Honorable mention goes to D'Angelo's, who make decent cold subs.

61. Burgermaster in Seattle
There's a few locations in the Puget Sound. We go to the Bellevue one.

It's $5 for a cheeseburger, but it is the best cheeseburger you'll eat, made with hormone-free, grass-fed beef, for instance. Their food is outstanding.

113. i may get flamed for this
but i think there is absolutely NO reason to eat hormone free beef, or at least to prefer it.

science!

there is NO way whatsoever the hormones given to beef cattle (growth hormone, trenbolone, testosterone) survive such that they are present in the actual flesh and bioavailable. and CERTAINLY cannot survive cooking. iow, show me ONE peer reviewed study that showed that eating beef from animals injected with hormones had ANY negative effect on the person eating it.

i think many people don't like it because it's "artificial", but science is science.

now, i TOTALLY agree about grass fed. grass fed beef competely changes the taste AND the fatty acid profile of beef.

it is what cows were meant to eat, ie evolved to eat, and grass fed beef has a much healthier EFA profile, better taste, etc.

66. Another great Wisconsin-Based chain!
Always loved the quirky names they had for their sandwiches. The one in the same city as my alma mater was dowtown by all the bars. It was a great place to go get drunk food, healtiher than the usual gyros, Taco Bell, Topper's Pizza, Marvin's (Local grease pit that had food that only tasted good when drunk/stoned) or Hardee's.

89. If you want truly great fish tacos,
go to that bar in Ocean Beach, San Diego, the very last business on Newport before the Ocean Beach pier. On the south side of Newport. I don't know the name of the bar, but the fish tacos are awesome. Very fresh fish and expertly made, in 3 styles. I never even liked fish tacos until I went there. The place is jam-packed at happy hour when the tacos are $2 each. We sat there and I ate 3 while my friend ate 5 and we drank Dr. Pepper until we had to pee, they kept refilling our glasses. Truly excellent fish tacos.

Cajun rice (dirty rice, basically) and red beans and rice, and the most horribly decadent buttery biscuits.

I remember eating at those in North Carolina and being jazzed when they opened up shops in Roanoke VA where I grew up. They had Cheerwine on tap! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

They pilot-marketed Cheerwine (poorly) in some convenience stores up here...sadly it didn't do well and was crowded out by too many rows of boring Pepsi crap. :(
