Bill would block imports of low-level nuclear waste
A congressman has introduced legislation preventing the import of low-level nuclear waste to the U.S., a practice that has prompted questions recently in South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah.
Rep. Bart Gordon, D-Tennessee, says foreign nations should take care of their own nuclear waste. His bill would ban the Nuclear Regulatory Commission from approving imports to this country unless the waste originated in the United States.
The issue of low-level nuclear waste imports has raised questions in South Carolina since a plan surfaced late last year to bring Italian nuclear refuse through Charleston. Energy Solutions, which runs Barnwell County’s low-level nuclear waste dump, proposes to send the material to Tennessee for processing or Utah for disposal.
