Don Young is lawyering up...
WHY would Don spend $25,000 hiring a lawyer rather than just giving back the $20,000 donation??

Young seeks legal advice on tainted donation
CAMPAIGN MONEY: Gift of $20,000 troubles representative

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Don Young's campaign has retained a Washington, D.C., law firm to represent him in connection with campaign contributions from a Wisconsin trucking executive who is now under indictment.

The $25,000 retainer to Akin Gump Strauss Hauer was disclosed over the weekend in quarterly campaign finance reports.

"With all the innuendo, accusations and words that have been out there, I just didn't think it was a bad decision to have some legal counsel and keep them on retainer for basic feedback and second opinion," Young campaign manager Steven Dougherty said Monday.

Young, an Alaska Republican in his 18th term, hired the legal team around March 12, as the U.S. attorney's office in Milwaukee was looking into campaign contributions by businessman Dennis Troha. Troha reportedly benefited from new truck-hauling rules that Young helped pass in 2005 as part of a major transportation-spending bill.

Young, who received about $20,000 in campaign contributions from Troha, his family members and associates, has said he does not recall ever meeting the man. Nor did he know Troha would benefit from new rules Young favored allowing longer "saddlemount" truck combinations.

1. Nothing wrong
with hiring a lawyer but but it just makes me wonder . . .

Keep flipping over the rocks and shining the lights. I'm thinking there is some pretty yucky stuff under those rocks.

3. you gotta love these pols
Don doesn't remember meeting the guy but he's gonna retain a lawyer. Sure, he never knew any specifics about anything, who did in that congress?
I dearly hope this is the last year for this big headed bag of water. Every communication I've ever sent him gets replies of cut and paste slop put together by some staffer, probably signed by a machine. I might as well be talking to a statue for all the listening this person has ever shown.
Vote him out.

4. Oh, you mean like this?
(From April 14)

Dear "Blue_in_AK",

Thank you for writing to me to express your views on President Bush. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

President Bush is a strong leader who has faced unprecedented challenges during his five years in office. I was proud to support his candidacies in 2000 and 2004 and continue to support his work in The White House. While President Bush and I do not agree on every issue, I respect his integrity and am proud to stand behind him on the major issues affecting the American people and Alaskans in particular.

The President and I have worked together on a number of important legislative priorities for Alaska , including the Highway Reauthorization bill, adjusting the No Child Left Behind program for Alaska 's unique circumstances, opening ANWR and protecting our fishing and timber industries. I am confident that he will continue to serve our Nation well during the remainder of his term.

Once again, thank you for expressing your views on this issue. If you haven't already done so, I would encourage you to sign up for my e-newsletter at http://donyoung.house.gov/IMA/issue_subscribe.htm . This will allow me to provide you with updates on this and other important issues. If I can be of any assistance in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

DON YOUNG

Congressman for All Alaska

5. Pea green with envy
Young never answers my letters. I feel so neglected.

Lisa Murkowski wrote me once in response to my plea she not vote to confirm Alerto Gonzales as US-AG. She said, more or less, I trust Bush and will follow his recommendations.

I wonder if she still thinks this was a good idea?
