Seminole Audubon and the Central Florida Sierra Club are holding a garage sale to raise money to help pay legal bills over a manatee lawsuit. A developer wants to build a private boat marina in the Wekiva Protection Zone on the St. Johns River in DeBary - just 1.6 miles from the Wekiva River. One of the biggest concentrations of manatees uses this area to travel in the St. Johns. The area is also Black Bear habitat. The marina is against DeBary's land use plans and against the Wekiva River Management Protection Act in which no new marinas are allowed.
The developer is asking the city to change the land use plans. For more details go to:
http://www.seminoleaudubon.org/marina1.pdfAlthough I will be involved in my own event that day (
http://www.savenativeflorida.com), I can vouch for the people conducting this important effort. They have raised over $30,000 so far and owe $12,000 more.
Can you help?
If you have items to donate, please call Mary-Slater at 407-481-4398 or email her at flsierra@bellsouth.net and she'll come collect them. Please hurry because the sale takes place 12/1 from 8AM until around 2PM. The bears and manatees need your help.
