The first link leads to the blog of the young viper who is the newest columnist for the Freeport Journal Standard. This blog entry, entitled, "The Column of the Week," appeared in Tuesday's J-S as an editorial called, "Is Government Medical Care the Answer?"

The second link leads to the column that appeared on July 21, 2009 in the Journal Standard. It asks if public schools are unconstitutional.

I wish you could see the picture of the columnist that accompanies this illogical drivel. He has a sneer on his face that makes him look like he is auditioning to be the next Dick Cheney.

I called the publisher of the paper yesterday morning. I remained cordial and polite. I told him that this columnist was too far outside the mainstream to appear in a local newspaper like the J-S. I asked him if this was going to be a regular feature on their editorial page. He said, somewhat defensively, yes. I asked him if there was going to be a liberal counterpart. He said yes. I asked if this was going to be a strong writer, or some weak-kneed person who misrepresented liberalism. he assured me it would be a good writer. I told him I would wait and see.

Further, I told him that I was deeply offended by the untruths and factual errors in both columns. They are illogical.

Then I called some of the people on my central committee who subscribe to the paper. I asked them to write LTTEs. If they were uncomfortable with that, I asked them to call the editor or the publisher.

Then I called the Stephenson County Democratic chairman. He is going to call attention to this at his next central committee meeting. I am going to do the same thing at the next Ogle County meeting.

Of course I intend to write a letter myself. Sometimes it is easier to fight this sort of thing at the local level.

What responsible publisher would allow this tripe in their paper?

Does anyone here have any comments on the details of this spew?

1. This kid bears a strong resemblance to an actor with the same

name who was in "How to Eat Fried Worms."

I did not think the actor was any more than fourteen. The little Freeper in the Freeport paper is says he is nineteen.

Please tell me this freeper and the has-been kid actor are not one and the same. Tell me I am imagining things.

I would think they'd want somebody with a little life experience, conservative or liberal.

I get the feeling he's probably somebody's kid. Somebody with some money or an important job.

7. The Ottawa-Streator Times has a new publisher,

who's a libertarian/conservative Republican. He's decided to stop receiving AP wire services, because they're too liberal (wtf?). There have also been a couple of birther articles lately. Happily, there's another local paper, the LaSalle-Peru News Tribune, that's balanced and sane and covers Ottawa as well as the Times. I called the Times and canceled my subscription. And told them why. Then, I subscribed to the News Tribune, and also told them why, lest they consider a swing to the right.

They have every right to publish this crap. But we don't have to pay for it.

Oh, another thought...the Ottawa Times allows access to its full online edition for free. So, if people suggest I should read an article, I can, without supporting the right wing rag. See if your paper can be accessed for free.

And stay on 'em about the crap they're printing!
