Senator Scott Brown or The Truth & Sterling Reputation of a Family Run Christian Camp?
Special to CapeCodTODAY by Chris London, Esq.

NYC writer excoriates Scott Brown: Camp Good News, an independent, non-denominational, non-profit Christian summer camp for boys and girls ages 6-15, is in the news for reasons which make me and some of my close personal friends who were former campers there sad, uncomfortable and perhaps even a little angry. And it is not because the legendary camp recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. U.S. Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts and former male model, publicly proclaimed on the eve of the release of his memoir, “Against All Odds: My Life of Hardship, Fast Breaks, and Second Chances”, that he was molested as a child at a camp on Cape Cod, while officials at Camp Good News on Snake Pond in Sandwich confirmed that Senator Brown was a camper there.

Emancipating his inner Oprah

I will leave it to journalists to question the authenticity of Scott Brown’s timely proclamation, and whether his coming forward was anything more than ‘pathetic plea for publicity.’ To be clear Scott Brown did not run to authorities to unmask an alleged sexual predator, he and his handlers ran to Harper Collins in a political re-branding effort. Furthermore, if you ask me, his rather vivid description of his assailant almost sounds like some made up fantasy profile or caricature of a conservative’s view of a rather liberal looking predator; that is circa the first Nixon Administration. Is this perhaps maybe an attempt by a RINO Senator in Democrat lands to shore up votes on the left by ‘emancipating his Oprah’, well in advance of his re-election effort or the launch of a Presidential campaign?

<snip>

Despite the sensational allegations, the response of Camp officials has been exemplary. Camp Good News representatives have handled the fallout with remarkable candor and grace. Officials at a the Cape Cod camp attended by U.S. Sen. Scott Brown reached out to Senator Brown. Rather than contesting or questioning the allegations, stated instead that they applauded his coming forward with revelations that he was abused as a child by a summer camp counselor. Jane Brooks, who serves as director at Camp Good News acknowledged that the Wrentham based Republican Senator, attended the family run Christian camp but could not confirm whether the incident happened there. Ms. Brooks, nevertheless expressed that they are “sick about” Brown’s description of the abuse and further that “We’re crushed.” Dr. Stephen W. Brooks, a Hyannis surgeon and assistant president at Camp Good News stated “I think what he did was courageous.”

<snip>

So let me see he leaves a family run Christian camp established by an American hero, W. Wyeth Willard, a Naval Chaplain with the Marines in WW II, and his wife Grace Willard, an institution that has never had any such allegations against it in its storied history, forced to accept the truth of such allegations without the ability to verify or substantiate them, while the DA is asked to refrain from investigating and the alleged or shall we say “imaginary” abuser perhaps created to help Brown sell his legend and a few more books, remains free at large? Does this not strike one as fascinatingly convenient for Senator Brown?

In his Diane von Furstenberg/Studio 54 days, Scott was a male model with a wild rep.

Camp Counselor Sen. Brown Says Sexually Abused Him Could Still Face Punishment

BOSTON (CBS) – There is a possibility that the camp counselor who sexually abused Scott Brown when he was ten-years-old at a Cape Cod religious summer camp could still face criminal charges.

According to Attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who has represented hundreds of sexual abuse survivors, a survivor can file charges until the age of 25 for a report of sexual assault.

However, he says in Massachusetts there is an exception: For every day the perpetrator or the sexual abuser leaves the state, the statute is extended for a day. “So he left the state when Scott Brown was a certain age and he’s not come back, Scott Brown could file charges now.”

<snip>

Garabedian says he believes there are many other victims of this abuser, he says “Without a doubt.” But he says it’s up to Scott Brown to decide whether to ask for an investigation.

DA vows to help Scott Brown if he wants to pursue case against molester

Law enforcement officials and operators of a Sandwich religious camp today vowed to help Senator Scott Brown if he wants to pursue possible criminal charges against a summer camp counselor who sexually assaulted him four decades ago when he was a child.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said in a telephone interview that he has not spoken to Brown about launching a criminal investigation, but plans to contact the senator based on media reports that Brown reveals in his new autobiography that he was molested at a Cape Cod camp when he was 10.

“I will reach out to Senator Brown only for the purposes of ascertaining his feelings about the situation with respect to whether he wants to do anything further,’’ O'Keefe said.

The prosecutor acknowledged that successfully prosecuting someone for a crime that allegedly occurred around 1970 would be difficult, if not impossible. There is a 15-year statute of limitations on sexual assault charges in Massachusetts. However, if the abuser left the state within that time then the clock would stop, making charges possible.

Boston Common protesters urge Brown to support Title X in lieu of Senate vote

Chanting “Birth control, not bans!” supporters of Planned Parenthood rallied at the Boston Common on Saturday to demand Republican Sen. Scott Brown vote against the defunding of Title X.

At least 500 Boston-area residents gathered at the Common to protest the recent budget measures in Congress that may stop federal funding Planned Parenthood and similar groups, pending a vote in the Senate next week.

Title X of the Public Health Service Act provides reproductive-health services, such as pregnancy tests and sexually transmitted disease prevention education, to those who need them.

The supporters said they believed Massachusetts representatives would vote against the defunding, but they were worried about Brown’s vote.

Stop the Assault on Family Planning and Planned Parenthood

They're not just against abortion. They're against family planning. The anti-choice majority in the House has declared an all-out war on women's reproductive health, and it's up to the Senate to stop them. The House of Representatives voted in February to end all funding for the Title X program, which provides comprehensive family planning services — including counseling, contraceptives, education, and preventive health screenings — to low income women and men. For many, it is their sole entry point into the health care system. Further, they voted to eliminate all federal funding for Planned Parenthood. Tell your senators to stop this assault on women's reproductive freedom. Take Action NOW.

1. ALL of this is just more prooof that Brown is only a Senator to..
satisfy his own ego, and boost his income from writing books filled with half-truths. When it comes to legislation, Brown will talk out of both sides of his mouth, hoping the stupid voters will hear just what they want to hear.

2. I found it interesting, or disturbing, that he wanted to let the matter drop and
not try to find the perp (is he still out there offending?). I could only think of the priest scandals and what would we all make of it, if after all these years, everyone said to forget about it. It happened long ago.

3. Your post on this Brown Camp thread is particularly timely today...
As it was discovered that a man committed suicide at the camp in the last 24 hours...

THIS, after yet ANOTHER person came forward with a similar allegation, but who named the perp to his lawyer...who started a state district attorney's and state police investigation into this latest allegation.

4. And this couldn't have been the man who Brown said he was molested by
because it was reported earlier that he didn't work there when Brown was there. So, what's up with this place? Seems to be many warnings that were either not followed up on or were ignored.

5. Yeah, I want to know more about how this place shields these....
guys... and what would have happened if Brown had done the right and brave thing at 18 or 20 years old and reported it THEN?

Probably would have saved some molestation of other victims back then...

Also, I hear from the news that there may be a THIRD man coming forward, but he ALSO, like Brown, claims it was someone else not the suicide guy.

So we have at LEAST 2 or maybe more of these guys at that one camp. Time for full disclosure, Mr. Brown.

6. Up to 13 accusations. I hope this isn't turning into a Fells Acre story.
