KLASTV story

Las Vegas, Nevada

Quote:

Oct. 12) -- Employees of a private voter registration company allege that hundreds, perhaps thousands of voters who may think they are registered will be rudely surprised on election day. The company claims hundreds of registration forms were thrown in the trash.

Anyone who has recently registered or re-registered to vote outside a mall or grocery store or even government building may be affected.

The I-Team has obtained information about an alleged widespread pattern of potential registration fraud aimed at democrats. Thee focus of the story is a private registration company called Voters Outreach of America, AKA America Votes.

The out-of-state firm has been in Las Vegas for the past few months, registering voters. It employed up to 300 part-time workers and collected hundreds of registrations per day, but former employees of the company say that Voters Outreach of America only wanted Republican registrations.

Two former workers say they personally witnessed company supervisors rip up and trash registration forms signed by Democrats.

"We caught her taking Democrats out of my pile, handed them to her assistant and he ripped them up right in front of us. I grabbed some of them out of the garbage and she tells her assisatnt to get those from me," said Eric Russell, former Voters Outreach employee.

Eric Russell managed to retrieve a pile of shredded paperwork including signed voter registration forms, all from Democrats. We took them to the Clark County Election Department and confirmed that they had not, in fact, been filed with the county as required by law.

So the people on those forms who think they will be able to vote on Election Day are sadly mistaken. We attempted to speak to Voters Outreach but found that its office has been rented out to someone else.

The landlord says Voters Outreach was evicted for non-payment of rent. Another source said the company has now moved on to Oregon where it is once again registering voters. It's unknown how many registrations may have been tossed out, but another ex-employee told Eyewitness News she had the same suspicions when she worked there.

It's going to take a while to sort all of this out, but the immediate concern for voters is to make sure you really are registered.

Call the Clark County Election Department at 455-VOTE orclick here to see if you are registered.

The company has been largely, if not entirely funded, by the Republican National Committee. Similar complaints have been received in Reno where the registrar has asked the FBI to investigate.

3. Wasn't there another story yesterday
about an official trying to disallow voters who had moved (from one polling district to another) in Nevada? Am sure I read something...the guy flat-out said he was trying to lower the # of Democrats voting. Anyone else remember?

5. Fake America Votes
There is basically a group that coordinates other groups of progresives called America Votes. They help groups like ACT and Seirra Club coordinate, so not only did this group screw over voters, but they also made the real America Votes group look bad. There have been a number of these types of stories just here up North, and from what I understand the real dirty stuff is happening down south since thats were the base is located. Hopefully the public wakes up enough and the Republicans trash themselves enough that we can get a new rep in there.

Unfortunatly, according to the AP Republicans took back the lead in total registered voters, although the fact that they probably threw away thousands of Democrat registrations probably explains how they did it. I don't think that Republicans are going to come out in their traditional force though, considering Ziser ain't exactly a winner, and Bush has dissapointed most of them in the debates. Last debate could be the final nail in the Repubican coffin here. People should bring caskets for George in Reno on Thursday.

In Washoe County you can check your registration status here...

-Michael Moore in Reno Wed night!
-Protest Bush on Thursday OR go see Teresa
-ACT GOTV starts this weekend as does early voting! Help us get out the vote!

Just saw a "what makes george tick" commercial! I like it!

6. Question: would the canvassers have been deputy registrars?
http://www.newsreview.com/issues/reno/2004-07-29/election.asp

In Texas, if you register someone on the spot, you not only have to have been sworn in as a deputy registrar, but you have to give the person you registered a receipt (that has your name on it). (If you do the form through the mail, you have to include a copy of your drivers license or some other proof of where you live)

So, in all those cases where someone was registered outside of the county clerk's office, wouldn't the registree have been given a receipt?

7. You don't need to be a deputy in Washoe
I don't think you need to be in Clark County either, but I was told by some people that went to Carson to do registration they couldn't do it the same way. In Washoe you certainly don't need to send in your license, although they do ask for the license on the form. If you registered someone and they filled it out, you don't need to do anything. If you register someone and filled out any part of the form for them you need to sign a line that you did it and give your information. Everyone should give a receipt, but on the news story they said they had both the form and the bottom ticket in the collection of registrations they found. People don't know they're supposed to get them until you tell them.
