Marijuana Group Files New Nevada Legalization Bid

11/15/2004

The Committee to Regulate and Control Marijuana has filed paperwork in Nevada that would require state lawmakers to consider legalizing up to one ounce of marijuana during next year's legislative session, the Associated Press reported Nov. 9.

"The marijuana regulation initiative makes sense because it gives society control over marijuana, while our current prohibition policies keep marijuana completely uncontrolled," said Rob Kampia, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based Marijuana Policy Project.

The group has filed 84,665 signatures of registered voters in five counties in Nevada. If a minimum of 51,337 signatures is verified, state law requires lawmakers to consider passage of the measure during the first 40 days of the 2005 session. If they fail to do so, the measure automatically goes on the 2006 ballot.

1. Legalization Works
One of the ironies of the drug war is that where it was been waged most loudly and enthusiastically is precisely the place where teen drug use is now most entrenched. Conversely where drug war rhetoric is comparatively mute, teen usage of illicit drugs is much lower. In the Netherlands, for example, which has the most liberal drug policy in Europe and where marijuana is effectively legal, marijuana use among teens is actually lower than in the United States. The survey found 28% of Dutch teens smoked marijuana as compared with 41% of American teens, and 23% of American teens had experimented with other illicit drugs as compared with only 6% of European teens.

On top of this one must consider the cost of incarcerating an estimated 750,000 people for marijuana

2. legislature
The next step is getting the legislature to consider it. You can start by writing either to your newspaper -
http://www.regulatemarijuana.org/write/index.php?ref=498

and especially your state senators and assembly -

On Feb. 7th, the legislature will start its 2005 session. Once I find out the exact date of the vote/ discussion of the marijuana issue (it will be within 40 days of the start), I would like to organize a group to go down there and demonstrate outside the legislature building - show our elected officials that we (as constituents) care about this issue and it will not be ignored or written off.

Please post in a reply if you are interested in going down to carson city for this.
