1. I Just Wrote to Marty . . .
asking him to consider running for the House of Representatives rather than the Senate. Tom Udall is the person that will be able to defeat Heather. Tom Udall has my support. I've supported Martín Chávez in his bid for other positions, but I can't give him my support for this Senate seat. Please, Marty, reconsider. Run for Heather's seat, please.

2. That's a great idea, not just because I've been thinking the same thing
My guess is that Marty won't change his mind; too bad... he'd have a great shot at the congressional seat, and Udall, in my opinion is the strongest statewide candidate for senate.

4. I realized that it might be better if Udall. . .
ends Marty's political career! For some reason Kos at Daily Kos really hates the guy. There is a good discussion on Marty here: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/11/13/1311/1310

5. KOS doesn't live here
KOS doesn't live here and I really couldn't care less what he thinks. We don't receive our "idea" orders from KOS.

Marty has done an awful lot of wonderful things for Albuquerque and he's made this area a much nicer place to live, work and visit. There is NO DENYING THAT.

If you don't support Marty, that's fine, don't come.

The rally is for people who DO support him.

He has a lot of support in this area (and cross-party support as well).

It'll be a good race.

6. Have you seen the polls?
The polls show that Udall has more support. They also show that Udall can defeat both Pearce and Wilson, but that Chavez can not. My first concern is to fill all our Congressional seats with a democratic Congress people. The fact that Udall happens to share some of the same views I have is just frosting on the cake.

As for DailyKos, sure he doesn't live in New Mexico, but reading his blog convinced me we'd be better of without Chavez in power. It wasn't so much what Kos had to say, but what other New Mexicans have to say. It also has to do with how unhappy I have been with what is happening to Alburquerque.

I can trace my ancestry to many of the first Hispanic settlers of New Mexico, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and earlier settlers of Zuni, Isleta and the northern Tewa pueblos. I was born and raised in Santa Fe, but my Hispanic family is from the Rio Abajo. I've lived in Alburquerque since 1971. I see the same thing happening here that happened in Santa Fe. The developers are taking over. Our Hispanic neighborhoods are being torn down, and expensive homes are being built over them. We are being pushed out of our neighborhoods as the tax rate increases with the price tag of these new homes. I resent Martin Chávez taking it for granted that we Hispanic, Native New Mexicans will support him without question. His actions have not been in our best interest.

The development in Alburquerque since Mr. Chávez became mayor has been poorly planned. We barely had enough water for the population as it was in the 1980s, and yet our mayor has pushed for more development. Urban sprawl and the traffic that has resulted has result is reason enough to be unhappy with Mr. Chávez. I almost hate to leave my house or work because the traffic is horrendous these days. I fear that soon I'll be pushed out of my home because all around me condos and other pricey homes are being built.

I won't even go into how I view our mayor as "Bushlite" because of his bid for consolidation of power into his hands. I just feel relieved that he didn't take total control of the school board.

The latest polls from KOB TV:

Democratic Primary:
Rep. Tom Udall (D) 62%
ABQ Mayor Martin Chavez (D) 32%
Other 4%
Undecided 2%

Republican Primary:
Rep. Heather Wilson (R) 56%
Rep. Steve Pearce (R) 37%
Other 3%
Undecided 4%

General Election Match-ups:
Rep. Tom Udall (D) 54%
Rep. Steve Pearce (R) 40%
Undecided 5%

Rep. Steve Pearce (R) 52%
ABQ Mayor Martin Chavez 42%
Undecided 7%

Rep. Tom Udall (D) 56%
Rep. Heather Wilson (R) 41%
Undecided 3%

Rep. Heather Wilson (R) 47%
ABQ Mayor Martin Chavez (D) 46%
Undecided 7%

We need someone who will change the course of this Nation, not sell it out to the highest bidder. Udall is the best candidate.

7. This is pretty funny...
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 08:24 AM by Bounce
You are lamenting pretty much the same thing that various native peoples have been lamenting since, what, 1492 or so.

There were people here when your ancestors came here. With them came more "traffic" (albeit, at that time it was horse traffic on the trail) and growth.

What gives you the right to claim "ownership" of New Mexico? Your "I've been here longer than you have and I support Udall because of all the high taxes, new homes, growth and the traffic" is a joke. Are you kidding????

What's Udall's plan to turn back the tide of people moving to the desert southwest? Has he proposed tax cuts? Is he proposing a border fence? What's his plan to get cars off the road so you can drive without so much traffic??? Gimme a break.

Growth is something that cannot be stopped. People are coming. You haven't SEEN traffic yet! Give it ten more years. Marty has done a great job of managing our growth since he was elected Mayor.

Speaking of water (in case you don't remember), Marty led the fight to retain our water for the people rather than wash it down the Rio Grande for the fish.

He really cleaned up the downtown area and have you seen Tingley Beach???? It's beautiful and a great place to take the family. It used to be a real dump.

Albuquerque leads THE WORLD in bicycle paths. You can get literally ANYWHERE in the Albuquerque area on a bicycle. It's awesome and Marty led that program.

Marty pretty much single-handedly saved my house. During the bosque fire a few years ago my house was in real danger. Marty procured a helicopter from somewhere (it wasn't on the job before he personally got involved) and that thing stopped the fire about a quarter mile from my house!

The bosque area has been cleaned up and is not NEARLY the fire hazard that it was. Our streets are clean and the medians are attractive.

I do need you to answer one question for me.... Who is going to "PUSH YOU OUT OF YOUR HOME," Marty? I haven't seen ANYONE pushed out of their home - NOBODY!

One the one hand you whine about the urban "sprawl" and on the other hand you whine about the congestion of condos, traffic and high priced homes. Which is it that irritates you, congestion or sprawl? Or, might it be that you are just angry, period?

We're a blue state. If high taxes are a problem for you, you might want to vote for someone who says they'll CUT TAXES. Is there someone who says they want to do that? If so, I haven't seen them. Well, Bush I guess! Are you going to vote for him??? lol

As far as our school board goes.... someone needs to take control. It's OUT OF CONTROL!

You probably angry with Marty because you got nailed by a red light camera or two and that pisses you off.

LOL

Your attacks on Marty are unconvincing because they're baseless.

Instead of attacking Marty, why not outline the reasons we should VOTE FOR Udall?

8. Udall is my Candidate because of his voting record on Environmental Issues!
Quote:

Of course every new wave of New Mexicans does this. My gripe is that people who have $$$ $ are pushing out people who roots and time in this state. I despise the way this country is centered on the fact that those with $$$ have more validity. People who have roots, honor, conscience, etc. are of less value than people who have $$$$. The present U.S. executive administration is a perfect example of what I'm saying.

Actually, the Hispanics who returned to New Mexico in 1683, as well as the new Hispanic settlers who joined them learned to live together with the Native People. The First American Revolution humbled them . In order for both the Pueblos and Hispanic settlements to survive they had to get along. There were efforts by both the Spanish and Mexican governments to protect Pueblo land. They weren't always successful, but there for efforts. I won't give you a New Mexico History lesson here, but you may need a New Mexico natural environment lesson.

Quote:
>There were people here when your ancestors came here. With them came more "traffic"
>(albeit, at that time it was horse traffic on the trail) and growth.

Haaa, traffic on horse trails. That is a good one. I'm talking about poor development planning. I'm talking about pushing for growth in a water poor state. I'm talking about selling out New Mexico to the highest bidder. I'm talking about pushing for a major roadway through the one place in this city that has been saved as a sacred site, the petroglyph monument.

We live in an environment that has never been able to sustain a large population. We simply do not have the water. We can't rely on the ground water any more because it just isn't there. This is true for the whole state. I'm sorry, you just can't squeeze water out of a dry land. This is my concern. All the Udall family members in politics show an understanding of this fact. Their policies and their votes in Congress prove this. The actions and policies of Mayor Chávez do not show this fact.

>What gives you the right to claim "ownership" of New Mexico? Your "I've been here longer than you have and
>I support Udall because of all the high taxes, new homes, growth and the traffic" is a joke. Are you kidding????

Again, why should your $$$ enable you to push others out. How dare you laugh at the hundreds of years my ancestors sweated and toiled in this land, but learned to live with the land & the people around them. I've never been bothered by newcomers to New Mexico. My mother was a newcomer in 1945, and she loved this state as much as my father did. People who move into New Mexico, who care about New Mexico, who respect its culture and its people, and bring in their own culture to add to the mix is what New Mexico is all about. I'm talking about people who move in, push others out because the have more $$$$ and try to remake New Mexico into where ever they came from. This is what Mayor Marty's development has done.

>What's Udall's plan to turn back the tide of people moving to the desert southwest? Has he proposed tax cuts?
>Is he proposing a border fence? What's his plan to get cars off the road so you can drive without so much traffic??? Gimme a break.

This is just rediculous. The basis of my argument is that Mayor Marty has sold out to developers. He has pushed for development of Alburquerque, which has been happening too rapidly, and without consideration of the environment we live in. Have you looked at Udall's voting record? He is one of the strongest supporters of environmental concerns.

>Speaking of water (in case you don't remember), Marty led the fight to retain our water for
>the people rather than wash it down the Rio Grande for the fish.

This is a small issue within a huge issue. The Issue of water and water rights in the west is a huge topic that can't be covered by a little Río water. In the scheme of the huge topic, Udall agiand has more experience and more knowledge about this topic. I want someone, who will fight for New Mexico, which Udall has shown he will. Developing New Mexico is not fighting for New Mexico. It is selling it out.

>He really cleaned up the downtown area and have you seen Tingley Beach???? It's beautiful >and a great place to take the family. It used to be a real dump.
>Albuquerque leads THE WORLD in bicycle paths. You can get literally ANYWHERE in the >Albuquerque area on a bicycle. It's awesome and Marty led that program.

Of course we can't give Jim Baca or the City Council any credit for any of this when we have SUPER MAYOR on hand. I’m not saying that I haven't like many of the things that Marty has done. I'm saying there is more that I don't agree with. I'm saying he is too conservative for my tastes. I'm saying I want someone in the Senate who is from my political party and leaning. I'm saying I believe Udall can win and I fear Mayor Chávez can't win.

>Marty pretty much single-handedly saved my house. During the bosque fire a few years ago my house was in real danger. Marty procured a
>helicopter from somewhere (it wasn't on the job before he personally got involved) and that thing stopped the fire about a quarter mile
>from my house!

I'm glad he saved your house. How lucky you are that you have an in with the Mayor so he can personally save your home. I hope he saves my working class neighborhood in the north valley from the encroaching developers that are all around us. I'm not rich, but I'm educated. I choose a profession that has a lower salary in terms of $$, but a larger salary in terms personal & spiritual reward. Will Mayor Martín bring a helicopter to save my house when it has been decided my working class neighborhood needs to be bulldozed in order to put another road to the west side?

>The bosque area has been cleaned up and is not NEARLY the fire hazard that it was.
>Our streets are clean and the medians are attractive.

This was something that needed to be done years before, but isn't that always the case. Fires are going to happen. The family I married into has been fighting forest fires in New Mexico for three generations, so don't tell me about fires. I've married into fire. Believe me fire fighters that risk their lives to protect property just love it when the politico in power takes all the credit for stopping the fire. Please don't allow our mayor to do that. There's a republican from New York City who is an embarrassment for taking the credit of what heroic rescue workers and fire fighters did.

>I do need you to answer one question for me.... Who is going to "PUSH YOU OUT OF YOUR HOME,"
>Marty? I haven't seen ANYONE pushed out of their home - NOBODY!

I've already explained this. Just because you don't want to see the dirty business that goes behind $$$$ doesn't mean it isn't there.

--->>The rest snipped because it is just redundant!

>As far as our school board goes.... someone needs to take control.
>It's OUT OF CONTROL!

Wow, we have a rogue school board out of CONTROL! Amazing! Isn't it amazing that former student's of mine are doctors, lawyers, social workers, politicians, parents and went to universities such as Harvard, UC Berkley and UNM. How could that happen when a rogue, out of control school board runs the APS! Now who is being ridiculous.

The school board members are elected, as they should be. The schools are under the control of the State, not the City. Read the Constitution of New Mexico. The problems with APS are not easily fixed by having a one person take over as dictator. The problems need a community that cares about education and the schools. I fear a dictator more than I fear the problems.

>You probably angry with Marty because you got nailed by a red light
>camera or two and that pisses you off.

I never gotten a ticket due to the red light cameras, in fact it has been a while since I've gotten any sort of ticket. I agree with the red light cameras and I'm sorry Marty is backpedaling on the issue.

>Instead of attacking Marty, why not outline the reasons we should
>VOTE FOR Udall?

You know, I would rather not attack Marty, even if I don't agree with him, but he started attacking Udall the minute Udall entered the race. Udall has always been a gentleman during elections. Marty has not. My major issue is to have a progressive Democratic Senator in the U.S. Senate. Udall's voting shows that he is the person for this Senate Seat. I fear Mayor Martín Chávez can't win, and his record shows me he is not MY candidate for this Senate Seat.

9. Your real issue isn't with Marty then....
In virtually every answer your posted your REAL ISSUE is with money.

In your mind, more money coming in to town is a BAD THING.

In a way I agree. More money can breed more corruption. I don't deny that.

However, I don't see Udall's plan for stopping the inflow of people and money. He doesn't have one and there IS NO WAY TO STOP IT.

Plus, money can be a good thing. If you want to see a stark difference between the way things WERE (in the good old days before the gringos came to town) and the way things ARE, take a look at Acoma. It's' the longest continuously inhabited place in NM (maybe in the country) and they STILL DON'T HAVE ELECTRICITY up there!

While I admire those people, I don't want to live like them. I'll take Albuquerque any day.

On the topic of water, it's Marty who pushed the right buttons for our use of the San Juan-Chama water program we've been paying for since the 70s! Marty also started a large reuse and recycling project to provide non-potable water for industrial and irrigation uses. We are now using industrial water discharge, and soon will be reusing municipal water discharge, for turf irrigation as part of the plan to transition from the aquifer to renewable supplies.

That seems to me to be a HUGE DEAL for the environment and it is a HUGE DEAL when you consider Albuquerque's growth management.

Most of your issues against Mary have to do with issues surrounding "money."

While I don't disagree with you on a fundamental level, more money isn't always a bad thing. Just like with the former students you cite. They went on to BIG MONEY and it sounds to me like you consider that a "SUCCESS."

Congratulations to them. More money can be a GREAT THING!

11. I don't really think you bothered to read what I had to say.
My problems is growth without the water to support it. Taking water from other places that need it as badly as we do isn't the answer. People are in total denial or totally ignorant if they think the water we have in this state will meet the present growth, even water stolen from other regions. It is plain and simply, the water just is not there.

My problem isn't with money, my problems with people whose family have lived for generations in an area, and people with money pushing them out just because they have money. Why should I be pushed out of a place where my ancestor lived for generations and generations because I don't seek out wealth.

My problem with Marty is his mean-spirited attacks on Tom Udall whose has been a respected member of Congress, and is from a very respected family in the Western United States. Let's see...Marty's most recent attack is that Udall is "endangering our national security." Get real. People here in DU don't fall for such silliness. Most of the American public stop falling for such nonsense after the eight years the Bush administration crying the same thing when ever anybody didn't fall onto the Bush Band Wagon. Anyway, that is the kind of statement that I would expect to come out of a Republican's mouth, not a member of the Democratic Party.

My problem is that we are at the time when the decisions we make about the environment will decide if the human race will survive or become extinct. I want a person in the Senate that understands this and will work toward solving the problems, including working for alternative energy programs. Tom Udall's problem with the labs is that making weapons of mass destruction is not the solution we need. He would have given support to the labs had they shifted their attention away from WMD and to finding solutions for the human catastrophe that our children or grandchildren, maybe even ourselves, are going to face if we don't start solving our problems. Martín has done nothing to show he has the credentials to do this. Tom Udall has proved he does have the credentials.

What growth management? There is no growth management. Having Sandia Pueblo at our north is growth management. We can't push Albuquerque out any further north.

Why do you jump to the conclusion that the former students I speak of used their education to obtain money any more than I used mine to gain wealth? Just because they went to prestigious colleges, often on scholarships, doesn't mean they chose to chase the all mighty dollar (not so might these days). Big money isn't a success in my opinion, but what a person has contributed to the "greater good," or leaving the world behind a better place because of one's existence is my idea of success. I've met Big Oil Executives with Big Money, and there is no way you can tell me that they are leaving the world a better place than they found it.

When I told my husband about your statement that Marty saved your house, his first response was that the forest service saved your house. His second response was that it was he who saved your house. He did the fire model for the bosque in the early 90s while Jim Baca was the mayor. His recommendations was getting connected with the Incident Command System (ICS) which is coordinated by the Inter-agency Fire Central Center which is the forest service in New Mexico to ensure that the forest service would become involved in any fire in the bosque. Remember I told you I married FIRE!

To be honest, there are some good things that Marty has done for Alburquerque. It is too bad he keeps attacking Tom instead of running on the issues. I also fear that Mayor Chávez can't beat Heather Wilson, but I think Tom Udall can, which is my foremost concern.

Anyway, here is my new kitty named Pojoaque, but we call affectionatly call him Pokie:

14. This little guy has been so much fun.
His mother deserted him, and there he was crying on my front porch. How could I resist. He gives me kitty kisses. He'll put his little paws on my checks so I'll kiss him, then he nips at my lip followed by a lick. He wasn't felling well after his shots yesterday, so he snugged all night with me and all night long we shared kitty kisses.

Here he is with one of our other cats, Cassie.

16. Ooooooo another cutie pie!
With the exception of the two cats my husband brought into my life (Cassie is one of the two), all the cats in my life basically moved in with me. The cats we move in with us are very special. They chose us and that is such an honor. I had one (named Dulce) who literally came to my front door and meowed and meowed and shook her very fluffy tail demanding that I let her move in. She was almost 21 years old when died passed on last August. She was a great cat, and I was really missing her sitting on my lap, but suddenly there was a little black sweetie with blue eyes at my door almost like Dulce sent him to help me feel better.

18. We lost three recently.
It has been difficult. We had five cats after my husband and I married. Three of them died recently, all fairly old. Our hearts have been broken for a while, so a rowdy little guy helps heal the sorrow. He has perked up the two cats we have left, although they are geriatric kitties. It is amazing what youth will do for us oldsters. I guess that is why after over 30 years of teaching middle school, I can't imagine retiring.

Now the big question is, is Marty a cat person or a dog person? ;-)
