Saturday's tea party protest that many people feared would morph into a Wild West shootout turned out to be a problem-free event. About 350 people, mostly Republican supporters and less than 10 self-proclaimed Democrats, crowded the intersection of 10th Street and White Sands Boulevard - the busiest intersection in the city - for a protest against the Obama administration and his policies.

There were plenty of handguns and rifles on display, but no violence.

The event was staged by the Otero Tea Party Patriots and the newly formed Second Amendment Task Force. While the tea party group's main focus was to protest the Obama administration, the Alamogordo 2ATF conducted a simultaneous open-carry event..."

In earlier articles, people were invited to protest Obama and healthcare reform while wearing guns. I think protests are not an appropriate time & place to wear firearms. I was verbally threatened, while a man patted his gun, so I think that illustrated my point. My comments got published in the story: Denise L, who called herself a Democrat, was positioned in front of Founders Park, located diagonally from the Alamogordo Airborne Memorial. She said the gun display was not necessary.

"I see it as being juvenile and adolescent," she said. "I'm very much a pro-gun rights person. I come from a military family. My late husband was a gunsmith, but I think gun use is OK in an appropriate time and place. Wearing guns to a protest, to me, is extremely juvenile."

Lang said she also wanted to support the health care reform bill that passed the U.S. Senate on Christmas Eve.

"When I worked at the cancer treatment center in Alamogordo, I saw private health care turn down treatment for people who had pre-existing conditions," she said. "I think the health care industry is providing us with bad health care."

The Confederate flag and the hateful language on some of the signs was very sad to see.

Ignoring them is not the answer. They are generating their own destruction and it is just a matter of time until they either shoot someone or implode in their own vile hatred. Duhneece of DU was threatened by one of the angry gun toters because she was not wrapped in the US Flag and carrying a pro-Obama sign. He was screaming, "If you don't have your heart in America, get your asses out!" His last gesture was to slap his holstered pistol in a threatening way. Some of these people are bug effen nuts and convinced of the righteousness of their holy cause. This has become a religious movement.

Chanting "bring our troops home," tens of thousands of anti-war protesters have rallied in front of the US Capitol to pressure the United States Government to get out of Iraq.

Veterans and military families joined some lawmakers, peace groups and actors, including Vietnam War protester Jane Fonda, to urge Congress and President George W Bush to stop funding the war and pull troops from Iraq.

"When I served in the war, I thought I was serving honourably. Instead, I was sent to war...for causes that have proved fraudulent," Iraq war veteran Garett Reppenhagen said.

"We need to put pressure on our elected government and force them to...bring the troops home," the former sniper said, to cheers from the crowd at a rally held on the National Mall.

For more than two hours, speakers criticised Mr Bush and the US presence in Iraq before protesters marched around the Capitol.

Mr Bush's approval rating has dropped to some of the weakest of his presidency and polls show a majority of Americans disapprove of President Bush's plan to send an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq.

But Mr Bush has no intention of backing off his plan.

Asked about the protests, White House national security adviser spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Mr Bush "understands that Americans want to see a conclusion to the war in Iraq and the new strategy is designed to do just that".

Isn't everyone's party affiliation "self-proclaimed?" Is there more reason to doubt people when they say they are Democrats than when they say they are Republicans?

And how do you conclude that fewer than ten Democrats were present, without also determining the exact number?


And why conduct "open carry events" to protest the policies of President Obama? As far as I can recall, he has not said a word about gun control.


Seems as though seven out ten times that I read something disturbing, the setting is Texas or Florida. I once seriously considered moving to San Antonio, too. Even went there and looked at homes with a real estate agent. Sigh.

Our Congressmen got roasted a little by the local Newspaper, but mostly because he was trying to set up a town hall meeting to avoid as many tea-baggers. This usually involved not having an actual town hall. He eventually had one, and there was some disturbance, but nothing too bad compared to the rest of the country:

17. The last time we made national news was book burning

We made CNN news when a pastor had a book-burning, primarily of Harry Potter books. More recently, our County Commissioners demanded that White Sands National Monument NOT be listed as a UN Heritage Site, because 'we would lose our sovereignty.' Sometimes the history books lists Alamogordo as THE site of the atomic bomb test. It was actually miles from here, but it is beginning to make me wonder why we have so many rightwing nuts.
