The scheduled arrival of church-goers from the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., has triggered strong emotions among those who object to that church's virulently anti-gay stances since it was announced in March that church members would stage a series of protests in Santa Fe.
With the wait almost over, community groups and law enforcement are making their final preparations for the visit. On Tuesday, about 60 people gathered at Santa María de la Paz Catholic Community on the city's south side to discuss how best to receive the visitors.
In attendance were leaders of local churches, community groups and Santa Fe Police Chief Beverly Lennen.
Lennen said she had spoken to representatives of the Westboro Baptist Church, who told her they intended to adhere to a tight schedule of protests at eight churches and Santa Fe City Hall during their trip here Saturday through Monday. <snip>
