At Fort Jackson, South Carolina:
The first group of some 4,500 Army veterans who have been called back to active duty because of the war on terror will arrive next week for refresher training at Fort Jackson, the Army announced Monday.
About 300 soldiers are scheduled to arrive Aug. 31, Fort Jackson officials said in a statement.
Last month, the Army announced that 5,600 former soldiers known as Individual Ready Reservists would be recalled to duty because they were needed as truck drivers, mechanics, supply clerks, administrative clerks or combat engineers.
As many as 4,500 returning soldiers could be sent through the installation in several groups through mid-December. They are expected to head to either Iraq or Afghanistan.
