DaimlerChrysler to build new van plant in South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- DaimlerChrysler AG plans to open a new plant in South Carolina as it shifts where it assembles its Sprinter vans in the U.S.

On Sunday, state Commerce Department spokeswoman Karen Owens confirmed that a formal announcement about the Sprinter facility would take place on Monday.

The North Charleston, S.C., plant will initially employ 200 to 300 workers, and DaimlerChrysler hopes to expand to as many as 1,800 employees by 2010, several South Carolina newspapers reported Sunday.

DaimlerChrysler will use an existing 460,000-square-foot plant for its operation in North Charleston. The automaker expects to begin work on the site in January and have the assembly line running by the end of next year, the newspapers reported.

1. pathetic State paper article

I don't know if they don't read their own copy or don't think anyone else is reading it. Sanford said something to the effect that 'incentives don't win projects, we son this because we've improved our business climate with tax cuts, tort reform, etc.' Later in the article, it states that SC put a BIGGER incentive package on the table for the scaled down project than Georgia had for the larger, original project. Sanford will buy any job creating project he can between now and November to try to deflect attention from the fact that his tenure has seen SC go from middle of the pack on unemployment to the third worst in the country. Then it will be back to his libertartian ways with no government spending that shouldn't be cut except prisons and police.

any poll numbers for Sanford? He seems beatable, simply because he has hasn't done shit. Here in the Upstate, people are pretty much apathetic about him.

3. Sanford polls

He's still hanging in around 50%, which is usually unbeatable for an incumbent. He has alienated many groups - public school teachers, Santee Cooper and electric co-op employees and customers, much of the business community - but bubba out there only cares about 2 things; "He hates government, and I hate government and he wants to cut taxes and my taxes are to high." I think a lot of things would really have to break against Sanford for him to be in trouble. One possible break could be the primary against the unknown doctor from Prosperity. I've heard several Republicans say the may vote against Sanford in the primary to send a message, but then support him in the general election. I asked two political consultants what per cent of the vote Sanford would have to lose to hurt him. One said 25%, the other said only winning 70/30 could "cripple" Sanford in the general election. Which means, damn it, I'm once again torn on whether to hold my nose and vote in the GOP primary to have more chance of affecting the outcome.

4. I'm always tempted to vote in that damn primary

In Greenville, Republican moderates (the businessmen) have been running against the nutjobs Bob Jones types on county council. I'm always real tempted to vote in those things just to get the likes of Scott Case out. (Come to think of it, I'm not in his district, so it doesn't matter.)

Who are the Democrats running for Goverenor at this point? I thought I saw that the mayor of Florence announced, but I haven't seen any follow ups.)

Frank Willis is the mayor of Florence, but the favorite is probably Tommy Moore, a moderate long time senator from Aiken.

5. Sanford sucks....

He is incapable of putting any muscle to try to get South Carolina up to standard with states like New York, and Massacheusetts...The pay here is awful. It does get better upstate. Sanford really has done nothing except ask us not to buy so much gas right after Katrina...
There are some people that are interested in running against him however he porbably will carry Charleston County...:kick:
