Drinking Liberally -- Upstate
A friend of mine is trying to organize a Drinking Liberally chapter for the upstate. The group meets at the Handlebar on Stone Ave. in Greenville. The meetings have been going on for about 2 weeks now and are every Thursday from 7ish - 9ish. We usually meet in either the bar area or upstairs. Come buy me a vodka tonic for democracy!!!!!!

4. The time has changed....
They are now trying to hold it from 6:00 PM until whenever.

Try the Drinking Liberally website if you are unsure about the time.

5. Can you hear yourself think in the Handlebar?
I mean, is the sound level sufficiently low to allow for political conversations at those meetings? I've heard of noise complaints against the Handlebar from several blocks away. I've never been there, so I don't know. I'd be willing to stop by some Thursday evening if things aren't too loud.

7. Oh, mos def....
These shindigs are held early enough (before the band starts) in order to hear yourself. Most bands don't statr until 9:00ish, so there's plenty of time to converse before the place starts-a-rockin'.

The noise complaints stem from some "old money" type who has a vendetta against the Handlebar "ruining" his neighborhood. (Hello, he lives DOWNTOWN!!! With expansion comes headaches, I guess.)

I think the cops have been out there a few times and realized the guy's a crank, because I haven't heard much about it lately.

The MetroBeat did a fine article about the situation a few years ago. That's the last I've heard about it.

I should be there this week, as my exams are over.
