Hastert had some of the emails for several months, according to other unnamed Republican congressmen. It's unclear from this story whether those were the 2005 emails or the 2003 emails. However, Talking Points Memo has been on this story since Friday, and has been pretty meticulous about documenting the comments and the countercomments as they come out. From their compilation, it seems that the more innocuous emails (where Foley seems to be inquiring about one former page's status in the aftermath of Katrina) have been in the hands of the GOP leadership for quite some time, as has the knowledge that Mr. Foley might have some predilections that could be detrimental to the well-being of the young men in his charge.

To me, it sounds like the wife who overhears her husband talk about a birthmark on his secretary's upper thigh. It may be completely innocent, but a wise woman will wonder how her husband came to see his secretary's upper thigh in the first place?
