Almost three years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, Harry Smith of CBS News is still haunted by what he recalls seeing in Gulfport, Miss.

Smith, anchor of The Early Show on CBS, spoke at the Advertising Council of Rochester's annual luncheon Wednesday and pulled few punches when he spoke of what he described as a meager federal response to a massive crisis.

... Smith noted McClellan knocked the U.S. media for a past lack of assertiveness in challenging the president's arguments for war, and said he agreed there hadn't been enough media skepticism.

Recalling a trip to Iraq before the war began in 2003, Smith told the audience: "The regret I'll take to my grave is not standing up and saying, 'What are we doing here?'"
