As always, I'll withhold any firm ideas about what happened until the NTSB investigates. However, being a flight safety rep, mishap investigator for the USAF, I've seen too many times where aircraft will get established on final at night in IMC and simply let the airplane get too slow. If they were in icing, it would only compound the problem. Of course there could be a number of other scenarios too, and the above scenario is just one of those. However, it's a common one.
