Driving home his organization's message of the critical importance of this year's presidential election, NAACP president and CEO Kweisi Mfume said today the group was pushing to register an unprecedented number of new voters.

"If people think that the turnout of new voters was high in the year 2000, they haven't seen anything yet," Mfume told a gathering about 7,000 cheering members at during a plenary session at the Convention Center.

Mfume also took critical aim at Democrats. "Accountability requires that we reject pandering of both parties," Mfume said. "Every Republican is not our enemy and every Democrat is not our friend.

"We still have a society where some in the Democratic Party take our votes for granted, and many in the Republican Party refuse to campaign for them."

Despite the tough words against the Democrats, the NAACP announced today that today it would show the movie Fahrenheit 9/11 to its members in the Convention Center's grand ballroom. The documentary film, by Michael Moore, is highly critical of the Bush administration. The Democrats' presumptive nominee, Sen. John Kerry, is scheduled to address the group Thursday. The group also announced that Rev. Jesse Jackson, a former Democratic presidential candidate, will address the convention Wednesday.
