American Express paid CEO $27.3 million in 2008

NEW YORK -- Financial-services firm American Express Co. said Monday that it paid Chief Executive Ken Chenault $27.3 million in 2008.

The compensation package included a base salary of $1.25 million and no cash bonus. Chenault also received $10.2 million of stock awards and $$7.9 million of stock-option awards.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, American Express also disclosed that it paid Chenault $6.1 million in nonequity incentive pay, $640,711 for change in pension value and $1.2 million in "other compensation."

Other compensation included perquisites totaling $874,047, which included $134,2999 in "local travel benefits" and $414,702 for personal-aircraft use.
