9. I love the Generation Jones name
Thanks for the welcome, DU'ers. I'm surprised at the negative reaction to the name Generation Jones by some of you. I happen to really like the name, and generally people seem to like the name a lot, hence my surprise. But name popularity is such a subjective thing; no rights or wrongs. From the research I've done, it has quite a few connotations, among them:
1) large anonymous generation
2) slang term jonesin' (Jonesers were ones to make this popular slang term back in 1970s, and concept of jonesin' (craving) resonates for this generation which was give huge expectations left unfulfilled) (and jonesin' refers to any craving, not just re. drugs)
3) "Keeping up with the Joneses" fits this generation which has always had to be ultra-competitive because of its large population

I think the name has a hip sound to it as well-- that "generic cool" a la "Joe Boxer",etc. as well as the hip edgy quality to the jones slang.

The Blank Generation Richard Hell was referring to were people older than Jonesers, they were Boomers. Anyway, this is all moot, since the name Generation Jones is already so out there in terms of national media attention, awareness, etc. that it's too late to try a new name. Personally, I'm happy that this name has caught on, 'cause I was waiting for a long time for our lost generation to finally be recognized, and I've been thrilled watching the Generation Jones moniker gain popularity. No other name for our generation has ever caught on at all, so for better or worse, this would appear to be our generation's name. I, for one, am grateful.
