That is not to say that the military doesn't take orders from Bush and Co., but there are huge numbers of activities that the military does that administration officials never get involved in. In the case of this espionage case, the first people who probably got involved in it were people on the ground in Gitmo who witnessed suspicious behavior, not civilians in the Pentagon. It could very well be that every decision in this case has been made by military officers alone with no input from the White House.

The point is, we don't know, so it's stupid to speculate that there's anything unseemly about this whole affair.

And frankly, I am a little tired of our collective disgust at the Bush Administration being transferred to the military, as if every action they undertake is suspect simply because Bush happens to be commander-in-chief at the moment.
