I'm pretty sure I've stuck with the same one as long as anyone. I was thinking about this the other day.
Old-timers will remember DU 1.0, which didn't have such things. When avatars came about, there were a handful to choose from, all quite good, selected by Skinner, Elad and EarlG.
After a few weeks, people wanted to make their own. It didn't quite work that way yet, you had to make one and send it to the admins, and if they liked it it wound up in the choices.
I made Bongo. Scanned him from an old "Life in Hell" I had sitting on the bookshelf, and tidied him up pixel by pixel, adding the lovely cyan he still bears. If I remember correctly, it was the first non-admin-made one available. I felt rather smug about it the first time someone else used it.
Weeks later, the admins added the clever "make your own, upload it, use it and quit bothering us" feature. A stroke of management genius. I went in, lowered Bongo and added the "look happy," again, pixel by pixel. Boy did I have spare time back then. And I've never felt motivated enough to change it.
It was a simpler time. Just reminiscing, thanks for listening. :hi:
