Stalked in the grocery store! Weird.

So my husband and I stopped in the grocery store last night, and as usual, split up to grab separate things (expedites the shopping). It was a relatively unfamiliar store we don't go into very often, so I was wandering around a bit, got what we needed, wandered around a bit more to find my husband (who had the cart) and then we went to check out.

There was only one line open, and the woman who got in line behind us came up to me and said "thank goodness you have someone to protect you! You were being stalked by a short man in a cap! Every time you stopped to look for something, this guy stopped and watched you, and I told security they needed to make sure you got to your car OK."

I had noticed *nothing* of the sort, but I have to admit that when I'm with my husband, I tend not to be as observant of my surroundings as I am when I'm out alone, esp. alone at night. I don't know if this woman was just kind of wacky (she was very agitated, and I admit to checking my wallet after she came up to me b/c she was so close and flustered) or if she was was paranoid, or if she was truly being helpful.

Weird. Anything like this happen to you? Are you careful when you're out at night, or don't worry about it much? I live in rural NC; I was much more alert when I lived in LA, DC or NY, though the area really shouldn't make much difference. I think it might be because this western NC/northern Georgia area is the general area where that young hiker was recently killed (beheaded) and the older hiking couple was killed (woman beheaded, can't find the man or his body) - though the police picked up the suspect weeks ago. Maybe everyone is just on edge.
