I'm giving that adult the benefit of the doubt by assuming that he or she was not properly trained in gun safety. That is a common problem, and having public schools take up the slack created by parents who are unwilling or unable to teach gun safety would cover everyone in a generation or so.

Education doesn't work in every person every time, but giving everyone the opportunity to learn would maximize the effect of teaching.
