1. The best journalists keep themselves on the outside looking in.
I dated a writer years ago who agonized over the dilemma "perfection of the art or the life?" He was a talented writer; I believe he went back to school for his MBA and is working for Goldman Sachs now. Journalism doesn't miss him.

Guckert's achievement isn't real. Your editor's golf club membership is a hollow thing. Ha! I guess I'm just saying scroom. Real writers write. The others just give them an unending supply of material.
