1. We do what we can. And we have to keep up the pressure from the grassroots.
NEVER put all your faith in a politician, or a party. But be optimistic about what might be accomplished if enough of us demand it.

I remember the 1960 election and Kennedy. JFK was not an effective president. But his presidency, and death, ushered in short-term effectiveness under Johnson: Medicare, Medicaid, Older Americans Act, Voting Rights Act, and other reforms, all in one year -- much of it all in one summer.

But, as I say, never trust the politician: within that year, Johnson was beginning to perpetrate the Great Betrayal of the progressive movement in the Democratic Party by escalating the Vietnam War.
