People voted for her knowing that her husband would be governor in fact. Ma Ferguson was an ineresting character no doubt, but I wouldn't use her "election" as any kind of proof that women have come a long way baby.

I agree that Richards' election was something of a watershed moment in Texas. Even with Williams being the asshole that he is, I was still wary of that election and pleasantly surprised by my fellow Texans. Too bad 1994 was so dismal.
