And she is just a thesis away from getting her PhD. Her family comes from rural PA, the part (south-central PA) that some folks say is the "Alabama of the North". Several of her family members have been coal-miners. She says they are specific type of Appalachians known as "Ridge-Runners". I'd never thought of that part of the country as being part of Appalachia, but I guess I was wrong.
