The word implies something 'pathetic'... think about it. Who normally "clings"?

A baby.

Someone who "doesn't know better".

The word "cling" and all the ways to use it belongs on a list of words that no politician should ever utter in a sentence about voters.

What if he had used a phrase like "turn to" instead of "cling to"....it has a completely different connotation.
