There was something in Hillary Clinton's speech tonight.

She was more subdued and articulated what a Democrat stands for better than she has in a long time.

She did not attack Sen. Obama (and I noticed in his speech, he didn't attack her either).

I might have to eat these words later, but I think she realizes that she crossed a line in the Pennsylvania primary campaign, as illustrated by http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/23/opinion/23wed1.html?_r=1&ref=opinion&oref=slogin">this editorial from the same NY Times that endorsed her.

So what is someone who feels so passionately that she should be President to do?

Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee. The superdelegates have been so offended by the campaign that she has conducted (most recently in PA) that they will not overturn the pledged delegate lead and vote for her. I even suspect that some of the pledged delegates from earlier Super Tuesday states will switch their votes to Obama at the convention. She does not have the money to seriously compete in places that are must-wins for her like Indiana and North Carolina.

In my opinion, Hillary knows this and she isn't running for President at this point. She's making her case to the party establishment that she will deliver the Presidency in the general election if she is on the ticket as VP. Remember how she previously stated that conflicted voters might not have to worry because Clinton and Obama might end up on the same ticket?

I am starting to think this extended primary is more or less an expensive negotiation for Hillary Clinton to prove her worth to the Presidential ticket.

Fair or not, depending on the results of Indiana and North Carolina, we may have to consider it.
