59. Both Hillary supporters I know
are white men. Both of these men do not seem racist personally, but do seem honestly concerned that the nation will not elect a black man. Four years ago, this could have made sense. At that point, about half of the country still mistakenly saw the republicans as generally competent. In that context, the small number of votes the polling suggests will be decided on racial preference, could have thrown the race.

At this point, electing another stupid republican, regardless of complexion, will be a very tough sell.

As far as this is concerned, I think electing any woman to the office would have been quite tough in 2004 as well.

The point being that Bush's incompetence has been sufficiently profound and abundantly clear at this point to outweigh the vast bulk of prejudice and sexism. When we win, and we no doubt will, with either of these candidates, one thing will be clear, only through Bush being the utter a**hole he is, did any of this become possible. Of course, arrogance and stupidity were the dependable things about Bush.
