Revolutionary War vets kept stirring up local rebellions. Civil War vets made the Wild West wild. World War I vets became bootleggers. World War II vets joined biker gangs.
Not all that many of them -- but it only takes a tiny minority to cause a significant spike in random violence. Heck, you only need one Tim McVeigh to wreak mayhem.
This says nothing about the military -- but it does say a lot about what war does to people.
