"Two Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies trying to snare car thieves were mistakenly struck and killed by a fellow officer early Wednesday morning on a secluded stretch of road near Lake Okeechobee, next to a fog-shrouded cane field.

One man was being questioned Wednesday morning and another was still on the loose in this latest in a rash of tragedies involving South Florida law enforcement officers.

The deputies, who had just laid out some tire-deflation devices to stop the stolen vehicle in its tracks, were mowed down by a squad car that was pursuing the by-then disabled Toyota Camry.

"You are talking about a road that is absolutely pitch black," said Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw. "You are talking about deputies wearing dark green uniforms."

In the confusion after the crash, the car-theft suspects bailed out of their Toyota Camry and dashed into the neighboring cane field. A massive search proved fruitless, although one person was later taken into custody. His name was not immediately released.

The deputies killed were identified as Donta J. Manuel, 33, a 13-year veteran of the sheriff's office, and Jonathan D. Wallace, 23, who joined the sheriff's office a year ago when it absorbed the Pahokee Police Department."
