Actually, it puts these elections in perspective.
As it stands the joke reads very implausibly, but in essence it perfectly captures the surreally gross madness of the operation of the neocons' machines. There is a clear match between the likely vote-switching of the neocon machines and the Vatican machines!
The Vatican results just sound funnier, because the customary context is the one of normalcy and sanity generally found in the wider world.
