I think it is a matter of recognizing the power of the apology.
I invite you to check out "On Apology" by Aaron Lazare in case
you have not already read it.

I think there is a lot of blood spilled in history that flowed only for the
want of an apology, an admission that we are only human and that
when it comes right down to it...what the hell is worth killing
other people over? What is it that killing will make me feel more
secure and more content in my own human skin when having the courage
to understand my 'enemy' and discuss our differences could prevent the deaths of
hundreds, thousands, millions?

I think the future of our species depends on such concepts as
the apology...not that I think this planet would miss us much if
we just pissed off.
