especially as in one interview, Kerry explained that things he says now - which will be what he would say even if he were running, won't be dismissed as politics.

I assume this was a really tough decision - but a final one. If he re-entered, I assume it would put all the Kerry people who have migrated to others in odd positions. Unless something very drastic precipitated Kerry's reconsideration, it wouldn't work. (It's sad though as it's clearer that the position we thought might occur - Edwards and Obama being seen as too inexperienced and Hillary being seen as too Clintonish - would have left a big space for Kerry. Not to mention, in the midst of nastiness, a candidate criticized as too honorable and decent might look pretty good.)
