A new kind of sex education

Abstinence program teaches them to wait

MONTE VISTA — “We’re here to learn how to have the best sex,” Judy Allen of Alamosa told a roomful of sixth grade boys at Monte Vista Middle School. Over the sound of their giggles, she added, “By waiting until marriage.”

Allen volunteers as an instructor for WAIT Training, which stands for Why Am I Tempted? Over the past few years, Allen has presented the abstinence education program to five schools and several youth groups in the San Luis Valley because, she said, “I am passionate about the message. I feel it is very critical for the future of families in America.”

The non-profit health and educational organization is based in Denver. It was formed in 2001 to provide training for teens to abstain from high-risk behaviors and to encourage character development, relationship skills and abstinence until and in preparation for marriage.
“She’s taken into consideration that some (students) may have already become sexually active,” said MVMS counselor Mavi Valdez-Apodaca of Allen’s presentation.

Using a small Etch A Sketch , Allen instructed students to cover the screen with scribbles, comparing the messy drawing to the life of a sexually active, unmarried person. Allen then shook the toy until the screen was blank again. The message is simple, said Valdez-Apodaca, “You can start over.”
