I don't watch TV news anymore, but it made sense -if they invade another country they'll need a draft. They don't want draft dodgers. We can still go back and forth without a passport for now.

The US Department of Homeland security has decided that every person crossing the border from Canada (including US tourists returning home) will need to provide biometric identification documents starting as early as October 2004, and it is most likely that the Canadian government will insist on the same from US citizens entering Canada. There is no word of changing anything for Mexican visitors.
