For the first time the Olympic flag was to be carried into the stadium by only women: Italian actress Sophia Loren, Chilean writer Isabel Allende, Moroccan 400m hurdles Olympic champion Nawal El Moutawakel, actress and UNICEF ambassador Susan Sarandon of the US, Kenyan 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, former Italian cross-country skier Manuela di Centa, Mozambique 800m runner Maria Mutola and Cambodian human rights activist Somaly Mam.
