they struggled terribly while they lived there, my mom's generation adores Mexico and have been there much more often than they've been back to El Salvador. And the truth is, most of the cousins feel much more of an affinity for Mexico than we do for El Salvador. Hmm.
When my mom and I went to the Mundial one year in Guadalajara, I had her pretend to pose for me on the steps of the Mercado Libertad so I could take pictures of children out with their abuelitas. There was one little girl -- maybe five? -- who was pulling a comb through her grandmother's long long silver hair. I'll never forget how beautiful they were -- rosy from the sun, brown and silver and wonderful colorful clothes, sitting on the stone steps. What a lovely video. :)
