7. The signs he stole were for preserving and protecting the pension increases
The million-dollar battle over a San Jose ballot measure to limit police and firefighter pay and pension increases erupted in a tense confrontation Saturday that ended with a city councilman returning confiscated campaign signs to an officer while surrounded by firefighters who accused him of stealing them.

Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio, who supports Measure V on the Nov. 2 ballot, was driving to a community center ribbon-cutting Saturday morning when he saw a "No on Measure V" sign at Curtner Avenue and Almaden Road on what he said was public property, a violation of city rules. Oliverio pulled over, yanked the sign, stuck it in the trunk of his silver Saturn sedan and drove off.

But Tom Saggau, a strategist for the police and firefighter unions' No-on-V campaign who was going to his kid's soccer game, happened to spy the councilman pull the sign on what Saggau insists was private property. He went to confront him.

Saggau, meanwhile, can be heard remarking that he only saw one sign taken and was wondering how many more the councilman had confiscated. Oliverio responded that the signs were "all over the medians" on city streets; a measure foe shot back that it's the city code enforcers' job to deal with that.
