What is "news"?

I was gonna get into a whole thing here about what news is, or should be.
But I'm a bit under the weather and too lazy, so I'll just cut to the chase.

Is a man in Santa Claus suit killing a bunch of people and torching a house "news"?

Oh hell yeah, it's sensational, and unusual, and grisly, and macabre.
And I sells newspapers and gets TV ratings.
But is it really "news"?
