there is so much compassion in DU
for those who live in poverty, who are homeless, and facing tough times. I've come to expect it as the norm.

But in my "real" world, i rarely see it. I'm fortunate to know some kind compassionate people, and I treasure them. But most do not want to know about poverty, homelessness, and tragedy. My world is generally employed middle-class. I don't know any rich people. Except for people i have met in DU, i personally do not know anyone living in poverty. I do not personally know anyone in the military who has died in combat. Nor do i personally know anyone who has been victim of war (until recently, when i exchanged emails with a man who had lost his son in Gaza). It's as if i'm living in an employed middle-class bubble that has not burst.

There seems to be an epidemic of self-absorption and selfishness. It's deeply distressing.
