Unless he has a really good reason for it, firing at a retreating intruder does not look good at all.

Owning a gun is a very big responsibility. The NRA, whatever we think of their management politics, has some excellent firearms education classes. I'm taking my second course right now, and my instructors are amazing. Those classes should be mandatory for all gun-owners.
