Legislators say say ban on small ATVs, motorcycles hurting Oklahoma

Two Oklahoma lawmakers want the federal government to back off regulations that have shut down the sale of all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles intended for children 12 and younger.
OKLAHOMA CITY —

Two Oklahoma lawmakers want the federal government to back off regulations that have shut down the sale of all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles intended for children 12 and younger.

Ponca City Democrat Ken Luttrell and Sand Springs Republican Rex Duncan say it doesn't make sense to apply lead regulations on children's toys to ATVs and small motorbikes.

The manager of House of Kawasaki motorcycle dealership in Oklahoma City says he has had to tell customers they can't buy the smaller vehicles. Doug Monson says the store could lose $50,000 to $100,000 a year because of the regulation.

The lawmakers are sponsoring a resolution urging the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission to exclude the youth vehicles from the ban on lead toys.
