Senseless Destruction of War Memorial Leaves Community Asking Why

The Iraq War Memorial in Mount Pleasant's Island Park is now missing its bronze rifle and helmet.

Linda Fabian, one of the people who helped create the monument, officially called Operation Iraqi Freedom, Freedom Endured, said she was in "disbelief" and "amazement" when she saw what happened to the memorial.

"I don't understand why they want to do it. I don't understand why. I guess that's all I want to know is why would you want to do this," Fabian told 9 & 10 News.

The memorial is also in memory of Lance Corporal Justin Ellsworth who died in Iraq in 2004.

"The thieves who conducted this senseless act have taken an honorable and elegant monument to my son and made it a focal point of hatred and destruction," John Ellsworth, the fallen Marine's father, said in a statement.
