You're watching your town go through a major life altering crisis. How is it affecting you personally? Do you think your town is going to make it? Are you all planning on holding town hall meetings or is everyone leaving?
This may sound thoughtless, but I wonder if you would consider keeping a journal of what your town is going through for historical reasons. It could even help you not feel quite so helpless. I'm an amateur writer so this suggestion is something that I do.
