AG Suing TV Tax Attorney Roni Deutch For $34M

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― You may have seen her on TV, now you may see her in court. Attorney General Jerry Brown has filed a $34 million lawsuit against "Tax Lady Roni Deutch" saying she's swindled thousands of people.

Duetch can be seen in advertisements on late-night TV as well as tax advice shows on NBC's Today Show, CNN, and CNBC. The AG says Deutch spends $3 million a year on advertising and tries to create credibility by boasting that her law firm is the largest of its kind.

"Tax Lady Roni Deutch is engaged in a heartless scheme that swindled people with tax problems," Brown said. "She promises to significantly reduce their IRS tax debts, but instead preys on their vulnerability, taking large up-front payments but providing little or no help in lowering their tax bills."

According to the AG, Deutch's sales agents claim she has a success rate of 99% with the IRS, but the AG says only about 10% of her clients actually get their taxes reduces.
