to want to avoid a conflict, have come to the conclusion that conflict is probably inevitable, and by God they will prevail (Germany v. France).

Also, the idea, in both countries, that the active military portion of the conflict will be short lived (German planners believed they would prevail by the end of Fall 1914, as business leaders warned the economy would suffer greatly under a longer war. French planners felt their center thrust would break the German maneuver leaving them suing for peace in order to prosecute the war with Russia).
